Shark Trivia
Did You Know that the word “Shark” first became popularized in the English language….
.….in 1569 from pioneering English naval commander and administrator Sir John Hawkins? The Oxford English Dictionary notes that the word shark first came into popular use after Sir John Hawkins' sailors exhibited one in London in 1569 and posted "sharke" to refer to the large sharks of the Caribbean Sea.
Until the 16th century, sharks were referred to as sea dogs. The nature of that phrase is evidenced in the names of several species like the Dogfish Shark and the Porbeagle Shark.
The etymology of the word shark is uncertain. Many believe that the word may originate from the Dutch word schurk, in reference to the predatory behavior of a villain or scoundrel.
